5 Steps to Overcome Brain Freeze
A.K.A Writers Block
This mind-blowing information can help you succeed.
Statistics show 81% of the population want to write a book.
Fewer than 1% who begin will complete a book.
Let’s be optimistic. Pick a subject. Any subject.
Write one sentence related to your selection. Now, ask yourself these five questions:
1. What prompted me to choose this subject? Write your answer.
2. Did this subject remind me of something said, witnessed, heard, or felt?
3. Where was I when this event happened?
4. What was I doing at the time?
5. How did it affect me?
Write your reaction and response to the questions.
Now, select a character name and follow this prompt:
Pick a place well known to you (home, school, restaurant, place of employment, recreation center).
Insert an inciting incident. It might be minor (an argument or scuffle) or a major crime (robbery, kidnapping, murder).
Your character’s reaction (a moment of gained knowledge) and response (a period of deliberate thought) define his or her actions. Think of it as instinct (unconscious behavior) plus intellect (analysis).
What your character does will have repercussions. The severity is subject to your character’s choices.
Describe what happened before, during, and after the incident. This might be shown as personal (targeted) or coincidental (right place, wrong time). Your character must make a decision. What now?
Show trouble. Offer options. Let your character choose the next step.
Sensory details rate as one of the most powerful tools a writer uses for creating emotional depth.
The five senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell evoke memories and stir emotions. Apply them to your character based on your experiences.
Embark on a path of discovery and understanding. This steers your characters, and story, toward a successful conclusion.
